The Ashinaga Initiative for Africa is a programme aimed at developing leaders who will contribute to the development of sub-Saharan Africa. It funds overseas studies for young orphaned students, except for studies in medicine and law.
Who is eligible to apply ?
Eligible candidates for the IAA scholarship must:
- Be orphans of both parents,
- Be citizens of the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon (French-speaking), Central African Republic, Comoros, Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kinshasa), Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Gabon, Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Seychelles, Chad and Togo,
- Have obtained a bachelor’s degree or be in their bachelor’s degree year,
- Be born after 1 September 2000,
• Be fluent in French, - Hold a high school diploma with an average grade of over 14/20 or over 75% in the State Examination,
- Have obtained excellent grades in your bachelor’s degree,
- Be committed to returning home or elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa after your studies,
- Be in good physical health.
How to apply ?
Applications are open to students from French-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries. Since August 2024, the organisation has been working with selected high schools to identify eligible candidates in English-speaking countries. Candidates have three options for applying :

- By email to admissions.fr@ashinaga.org or admissions.en@ashinaga.org,
- By post
The application form is available online or from the Japanese Embassy in their country.

Deadline for Portuguese-speaking applicants: 17 October 2025 (12:00 GMT)
