Chan 2020 and CAN 2022: the CRTV tries to protect its exclusive broadcasting rights acquired at more than one billion FCFA

The CRTV, Cameroon's public audiovisual organ, issued warnings to several press organs on December 28 with the subject "Non-recording of the CRTV signal".

"As part of the 6th edition of the African Nations Championship of Men's Football (Chan) which takes place in Cameroon from January 16 to February 7, 2021, I have the honor to remind you that contract No. 0000026 of May 2, 2019, CRTV has acquired the broadcasting rights of this competition from the CAF [Confederation of African Football], which makes it the exclusive holder of these rights throughout the national territory with a ban on broadcasting by Internet Broadband and mobile technologist," writes Charles Ndongo.

"Any partial or total retransmission of this competition by your audiovisual structure could lead to the termination of this contract, and therefore, the suspension of the signal. Anything that could create enormous damage to both the CRTV and the nation as a whole," he continued. The DG reminds that the "CRTV" trademark is duly protected by the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI). Therefore, any broadcast by other channels of sporting events with the CRTV logo will be in violation of the law.

Apart from the intellectual property aspect, the stakes of Mr. Ndongo's exit are also financial. Because, the audiovisual company he manages says it has paid, in 2019, TV rights for the Chan and the African Cup of Nations (CAN) scheduled in Cameroon in 2022, for an amount of 1.96 million euros (about 1.2 billion CFA francs). By prohibiting the resumption of its signal, the CRTV protects the return on its investment which should generate royalties in terms of advertising.
