Logging: Cameroon wants to concession 57,190 hectares of forest in the Nkam and Donga-Mantug

Loggers operating in Cameroon are invited to bid for all or part of two new forest concessions in the country. This is the subject of a call for tenders that has just been published by the Minister of Forests and Wildlife, Jules Doret Ndongo. The concessions targeted by this call for tenders are located in the Littoral and North-West regions, we learn officially.

In detail, says the communiqué of Minister Doret Ndongo, 45,794 hectares of forest are put under concession in the department of Donga-Mantug (Northwest), against an area of 11,396 hectares in the department of Nkam, in the Littoral region. This makes a total of 57,190 hectares open for exploitation.

Companies interested in exploiting these forestry units have until September 18, 2021 to submit their bids to the Cameroonian government. The concessioning of these forests will contribute to the densification of logging activity in the country and should, according to the authorities, contribute to the opening up and development of the territories concerned.

As a reminder, according to Cameroonian regulations, logging operations generate a royalty that logging companies pay to the State. Part of this fee is made available to the communes where the logging operations are located, for the implementation of development projects.

However, the efficiency of the management of this forestry manna by the municipal executives has often been questionable, insofar as the vast majority of the country's forestry communes remain very poor. This is despite the fact that this royalty often reaches billions of CFA francs in some cases.
