PS5 : Sony confirms that the HD Camera accessory does not allow to play PSVR 1 games

A new FAQ around the PS5 officially confirms that the webcam of the next-gen HD Camera console is incompatible with older PSVR games. To play it, Sony explains that you need to connect the old PlayStation Camera accessory with an adapter.

Sony has just put an FAQ online in which we learn more about the backwards compatibility of PS4 games. The manufacturer is reassuring, stating once again that 99% of PS4 titles will be supported as soon as the console arrives in shops. This includes PSVR games, but there are several things you need to know.

Sony explains: "PlayStation VR games are included among the thousands of PS4 games you can play on PS5. However, please note that playing PS VR games on a PS5 requires a PSVR headset, a DualShock 4 or PlayStation Move controller, a PS Camera (for PS4), which are sold separately from the PS5. Also, the PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PS VR on PS5. You will need a PS Camera (for PS4) and a PS Camera adapter (no purchase necessary) to use PS VR on PS5″.

The PS5 is compatible with your old PSVR games only via PS4 accessories.

So you'll need to keep your PlayStation Camera webcam if you want to play your old PS VR games. We do not yet know what the adapter mentioned by Sony is. It seems (but is not confirmed) that this adapter will be included directly with the PS5 - given that "no purchase is required". By the way, we learn that the DualShock 4 controller and the PS Move will be at least partially compatible with the new console for older games.

However, Sony is not clear whether this will be the case with games specifically designed for the PS5. However, forcing gamers to connect old accessories to the new console with an adapter does not seem to be the most elegant solution, especially in light of the more modern PS5 accessories. However, there could be a very logical reason for this: Sony is undoubtedly preparing the arrival of a new PSVR natively designed for the PS5.
