Qualcomm launches Quick Charge 5.0

A fundamental evolution of quick charge

Since 2013, Qualcomm, an expert in the field of mobile technology, has been deploying new quick charge models. The industrial giant has just introduced its new generation, which is significantly more powerful and faster than the previous version. According to Qualcomm, Quick Charge 5.0 is 70% more powerful and four times faster than Quick Charge 4.0.

Only 5 minutes to charge the battery to 50% capacity

Based on a 4500 mAh battery, Qualcomm estimates that the user could charge the phone's battery from 0-50% in just 5 minutes. A full charge would take 15 minutes.

With these record-breaking charging times, Quick Charge 5.0 would become the fastest on the market. Its charging speed would be 450 mAh/min, 4.5 times faster than the best existing charging speeds of around 100 mAh/min.

The new protocol is based on a dual-stack battery and a power of 100W (2x50W), other Chinese companies had already used this type of battery but for a lower charge of 40W (2x20W). Qualcomm will be the first company in the market to deploy this commercial solution.

What compatibility and on which smartphones?

Quick charge 5.0 is compatible with USB-PD (USB Power Delivery), which is a standard charging protocol for mobiles and laptops. It will therefore be possible to use third-party chargers to charge at full speed rather than using your smartphone's proprietary brand charger.

The new generation of quick charge will initially be available on high-end phones. The first smartphones concerned should be those of the Xiaomi brand which benefit from the Snapdragon 865 processor.
