Bafoussam joins forces with Camtel to become Cameroon's first smart city

Cameroon's historic telecoms operator, Camtel, and the Bafoussam Urban Community (CUB) signed a framework agreement on 22 April 2021 that should enable the city to realise its dream of becoming Cameroon's very first "Smart City".

According to the International Telecommunication Union, this is a city that uses information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants, the efficiency of urban management and urban services as well as the significant improvement of competitiveness in the economic, social, environmental and cultural fields.

To achieve this, over the next three months, Camtel will help the CUB to have an internet connection, a citizen information portal and a presence on social networks, a toll-free number, a Wifi zone, an online library, intelligent signs, and a developed electronic payment service. Other projects will follow, such as video surveillance, digitization of tax payments and geolocation.

"I would like to assure you that Camtel will put its best and latest technical skills and expertise at your disposal to ensure a resounding success of this partnership," said the Director General of Camtel, Judith Yah Sunday. For their part, the municipal authorities hope, with this project, to provide a better reception to visitors who will visit Bafoussam on the occasion of the CAN 2021 which starts in January 2022.
